Samsung is prioritizing artificial intelligence (AI) as the key to the future of mobile technology. While we've already experienced AI-driven software through recent Galaxy features, the hardware might be poised for a significant transformation. According to TM Roh, President of Samsung's Mobile Experience (MX) division, future devices "may turn out to be radically different from Samsung’s existing phones."
In an interview with the Australian Financial Review, Roh revealed that a substantial portion of Samsung MX's research and development efforts is dedicated to the creation of AI-powered phones.
What will these devices look like? Although TM Roh didn’t disclose specific details, his statement about potential "radical differences" implies that the traditional rectangular smartphone design might be phased out. Roh hinted that AI phones would be more "mobile," which doesn't necessarily indicate a reduction in size. They could potentially feature larger screens and a greater number of sensors.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold6 already leverage AI capabilities, including S Pen support, to transform rough sketches into detailed images. However, AI's applications extend beyond just image manipulation and creation. It also plays a vital role in enhancing audio, text, video, 3D content, and virtually every aspect of digital interaction.
Samsung is integrating its headphones into the AI ecosystem, offering features like language translation, suggesting that accessories may play a crucial role in their strategy. Additionally, foldable phones are particularly well-suited for utilizing dual displays for features such as interpreter mode.
While there are some AI devices currently available on the market, none have achieved significant success, indicating that these models may not accurately represent what an ideal "AI phone" should be. This positions Samsung at the forefront of unexplored territory, highlighting the necessity for an extensive research and development effort.
