According to a source familiar with the matter, Apple is in the final stages of negotiating a deal with OpenAI. The Cupertino-based company wants to use ChatGPT to power up some of its AI-related features in the upcoming iOS 18.
Still, the source says the two firms aren't in a hurry to announce the deal officially just yet. Earlier reports claim that Apple is in talks with Google to use it's AI-powered Gemini chatbot as well. So, the smartphone maker might still be exploring other options.
Interestingly enough, recent rumors suggest that Apple will try to host most of the AI features on its device, allowing the on-device silicon to do most of the heavy lifting, while the rest will be taken care of Apple's data centers. This will give Apple an edge over the competition in terms of speed and privacy.
However, this might not be feasible if Apple strikes a deal with OpenAI.
